Red Light Therapy for Wrinkles: Does it work?
Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of ageing, but can red light therapy help improve their appearance? At Glowrite, we believe in taking an informed approach to skincare, so here is what the scientific research tells us.
How Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible red light in a process known as photobiomodulation. Researchers have investigated its potential effects on skin cells and processes associated with skin ageing.
Clinical studies suggest that red LED treatments may improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture. However, results vary, and more research is needed to establish the most effective treatment settings for different devices.
What Does the Research Say About Wrinkles?
A 2017 randomised clinical trial involving 52 women investigated red LED light at 660nm and reported improvements in some digitally measured wrinkle parameters after 12 weeks of treatment. However, assessments by blinded dermatologists did not find significant differences between the treatment groups.
The American Academy of Dermatology also reports that some studies have found improvements in signs of skin ageing following red light treatments. However, evidence varies, and the effectiveness of at-home devices remains difficult to compare because their specifications and treatment schedules differ.
This means red light therapy may help improve the appearance of wrinkles, but it cannot guarantee wrinkle reduction of reverse the ageing process.
Choosing an LED Device for Your Skincare Routine
Glowrite offers 7-colour and 8-colour LED face and neck masks, alongside red light therapy panels featuring 660nm red light and 850nm bear-infrared light.
When choosing a device, consider its wavelengths, intended treatment area and manufacturer-recommended schedule. Follow the instructions carefully, including any eye-protection guidance.
Consistency and realistic expectations are important. Research outcomes are generally assessed over weeks, rather than after a single session, and results from one device cannot automatically be applied to another.

Red light therapy is a promising area of skincare research, but it should complement a suitable skincare routine rather than replace daily sun protection or established treatments.
